Compiled some interesting updates from DC as we deserve a good line-up of movies to look forward in 2021. Kindly refer to the credits for more information
The Batman is set during the second year of the Caped Crusader’s career, according to a story on The Wrap. That should bypass the need to see another Batman origin movie, which Christopher Nolan’s films covered definitively in Batman Begins.
Indeed, the presence of Catwoman, Penguin and the Riddler in this film suggests we’re fairly deep into DC Comics lore, here. Expect this to be a Batman movie that features some actual detective work, too. “It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale,” Reeves told THR, explaining that he’s going for a ‘thrilling’ but ’emotional’ movie.
“It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”
That does sound very different to past Batman movies, and you get a real sense of the movie’s noir flavor in the Batsuit test footage – but until we see a trailer or official synopsis, this is all we really know about the storyline.
Reaction: A familiar vampire from Twilight takes a lead role in an action superhero but you can observe that he is less ripped compared to the “hunk” versions of the iconic superhero. It seems the story to be darker perhaps to use the same plot that worked with The Joker that made Joaquin Phoenix won an Academy Award. Would that mean that this Batman is aiming an Oscar? Let’s see…
The long-awaited Wonder Woman 1984 second trailer dropped Saturday during DC FanDome, DC Comics’ first ever virtual fan convention. The trailer gives a good look at Kristen Wiig’s wild-haired look and animal-print costume as villain Cheetah, and it even features Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) modeling parachute pants and a star-spangled fanny pack.
Producer Charles Roven told Vulture director Jenkins is “determined that this movie should be the next iteration of Wonder Woman but not a sequel.” He notes the movie is set in a completely different time frame and tells a very different story than the original. Maybe that explains how Steve Trevor returns — it’s a new iteration where he didn’t die.
Cheetah has long been a nemesis of Wonder Woman, with four different incarnations since her 1943 debut. (In 2001, a man briefly took on the title of Cheetah, but the other three have been women.) Early Cheetahs were just women in costumes, but more recent versions morph into a human-cheetah hybrid and have enhanced strength and agility, plus deadly claws and fangs. Thanks to a photo Jenkins shared in late June 2018, Wiig’s version of Cheetah was revealed as archaeologist Barbara Minerva, but there’s also no need for the film to stick closely to any comics story.
Reaction: Two femme fatale characters in a big fight scene, now that’s something to look forward! Then the Chris Pine is back, we deserve to glorify the love interest of our goddess
Dwayne Johnson didn’t even wait for Black Adam’s DC FanDome panel to reveal a new look at his DC anti-hero.
“You’ve waited long enough. As have I, thousands of years to be exact. The hierarchy of power in the DC UNIVERSE is about to change,” Johnson wrote on Instagram. “The man in black comes to crush them all.”
Johnson started training for Black Adam in January this year and previously said the role meant his “superhero dreams have come true”.
“As a kid, Superman was the hero I always wanted to be. But, a few years into my fantasy, I realised that Superman was the hero, I could never be. I was too rebellious. Too rambunctious. Too resistant to convention and authority,” he explained.
“Black Adam is blessed by magic with the powers equal to Superman, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line. He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people – but he does it his way.”
Reaction: Dwayne Johnson taking a superhero / villain is way overdue and giving a character that we need to hate might be challenging but he took the role of the Scorpion King before, it might work. With a proven box office status for Dwayne, nothing could go wrong for this.
James Gunn has dropped the first teaser for The Suicide Squad, with Nathan Fillion joining as TDK. The director joined the DC FanDome panel to discuss the 2021 film and we finally got answers to who plays who in the highly-anticipated movie. Idris Elba, who was confirmed a while back, will be playing Bloodsport while Nathan Fillion will appear as TDK.
That’s not all as the one and only John Cena stars as Peacemaker while Pete Davidson takes on the role of Blackguard.
Reaction: What happened to Will Smith? Good to see John Cena!!!
