Family is the basic component of a community and during the pandemic there are various challenges that needs to be addressed. Aside from the academic paraphernalia like laptops, books, notebooks, there are also national concerns like telecommunication for dependable internet, skills of academicians to use the digital platforms or modules, plus providing a conducive learning environment free ( at least minimal) from noise.
As I assist my niece at home, I observe that it’s critical to supervise and assist the kid. It is imperative to have an adult to assist in some technical troubleshooting and tutorials. Let us not confuse the term “coaching”, as adults should not be answering on behalf of the child but rather assisting the child.
College students are more capable and comfortable online although what is critical in this age group is to assess their online behaviors. The word is “assess” since we should allow them to explore resources or references .
Are you a professional who is also taking post graduate studies? Then this is also critical as you enrich yourself with adequate information either to complement your work or as passion.
I am observing that this New Normal may not be feasible especially to the underprivileged not just financially but in places where there are poor internet coverage.
DepEd national enrollment data as of Aug. 25 showed that the total number of enrollees for the upcoming school year has reached 23, 671, 227 nationwide for Kindergarten to Grade 12, including Alternative Learning System (ALS) and non-graded learners with disabilities. This number, DepEd said, is 85.17 per cent of the total enrollment in SY 2019-2020.
The enrollment data also showed that there are 21, 829, 448 students enrolled in public schools which is 96.7 per cent of last SY’s enrollment. In private schools, there are 1, 797, 173 enrollees or 41.75 per cent of the SY 2019-2020 enrollment turnout.
This is the main reason on how we can challenge our LGUs as it prioritizes education like providing them access to internet and gadgets. This is an opportunity for private sectors and NGOs to extend generosity.
Pushing the classes in October should be ample enough for public education to be ready.
