Netflix The Playlist in the tune of Spotify

Spotify is the world’s leading audio streaming service, with 433 million users, including 188 million premium subscribers spread across 183 regions. Of course just like any Silicon Valley start-ups, it also has a very interesting story to tell.

The Playlist has six episodes, all told from the perspective of someone integral to Spotify’s success. Episode two is about a music executive who, terrified by filesharing’s gutting of the industry he loves, relents and gets into bed with Spotify. There is an episode about the app’s chief coder, who battled to strive for a perfection that had never existed before. An episode about the lawyer who laid the groundwork for compromise with record labels. An episode about the money guy. Spotify wasn’t created by one man alone. An entire team was responsible for its success and they each get to put their argument across.

What happened to Taylor Swift in Spotify?

In 2014, the Shake It Off singer pulled her music from Spotify, where she was one of the service’s most popular artists, after bemoaning that artists receive a tiny royalty per song play. Swift, who initially refused to release her 2012 album Red on Spotify, has previously said that “valuable things should be paid for.” “It is my opinion that music should not be free,” she said at the time.

Fast forward to 2017,after 3 years… She’s back!

Swift said the decision to return to streaming services was to “thank her fans” for her album 1989 passing 10m sales. However, cynics also pointed out that the timing happened to coincide with an album launch by rival Katy Perry, with whom she has had an acrimonious and public feud going back five years.

On October 21st, 2022, Taylor Swift’s Midnights became Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day, and Taylor broke the record for the most-streamed artist in a single day in Spotify history.

Spotify pays artists

Spotify has revealed it paid $7bn to music industry rights holders last year, accounting for almost 25% of the industry’s total revenues.

The news came on the company’s Loud And Clear website, which was launched last year with the aim of “increasing transparency” around its payments.

The streaming giant said 52,600 artists earned more than $10,000 (£7,500) from Spotify in 2021.

Of those, 130 were paid more than $5m (£3.8m) over the last 12 months.
